Play Online Craps at Bovada

Online Craps brings the excitement of the classic dice game to Bovada’s online casino, offering the same fast-paced action and betting options for real money. The object of Online Craps is to predict the outcome of the dice rolls correctly, most commonly by betting that the shooter will roll a winning number before a seven. Bovada offers two versions of the game, and they are identical in terms of rules, house edge, and payouts.

Phases of the Game

The Come-On Roll

The first roll in craps is called the come-out roll, and it sets the stage for the round. Players choose their risk and put their bets on the table, then click “Roll.” On the Pass Line, a roll of seven or 11 wins even money, while two, three, or 12 loses instantly. Any other number becomes the “Point,” carrying bets into the next phase where the goal is to roll that number again before seven lands. Alternatively, players can bet on the Don’t Pass line, which wins on two or three, and loses on seven or 11.

Point Round

If the Come-on roll is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, then the next round begins. The number rolled becomes the “Point.” This round continues until either the point is rolled again or a seven is rolled. In the Point Round, several other bets can be made around the table before executing the second roll.

Craps Bet Types

Pass Line

Also known as the “Front Line,” the Pass Line Bet comes with a modest house edge of 1.41% and is the most popular Craps bet at casinos. At the start of a Craps round, chips can be placed in the Pass Line area, which is near the bottom of the display.

When the dice are rolled, there are three possible outcomes of a Pass Line wager:

  • 7 or 11: Instant win – Pays 1:1
  • 2, 3, or 12: Instant loss
  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10: Point is established

The third result puts players in the second round of the game, where betting options increase, and another roll can be made to continue the game.

Don't Pass Line

The Don’t Pass bet has a house edge of 1.36% and is the opposite of the Pass Line wager. The results of that bet are as follows:

  • 7 or 11: Instant loss
  • 2, 3: Instant win – Pays 1:1
  • 12: Push – all bets returned
  • 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10: Point is established.

Just like the Pass Line bet, the third result puts players in the second round of the game.

Come and Don’t Come Bets

Once a Point is set, players can place a Come bet or a Don’t Come bet. These wagers act like a second-round Pass or Don’t Pass Line wager. If a number like 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled, the chips on the Come or Don’t Come bets move to that number, and the game continues.

Pass Odds Bets

Pass Odds bets are very important as they have zero house edge. After a point has been established, players can begin placing Pass Odds or Don’t Pass Odds bets marked on the table. These bets bolster the original wager:

Pass Line Odds:

  • 4 or 10 - Pays 2:1
  • 5 or 9 - Pays 3:2
  • 6 or 8 - Pays 6:5

Don’t Pass Odds:

  • 4 or 10 - Pays 1:2
  • 5 or 9 - Pays 2:3
  • 6 or 8 - Pays 5:6

To place these bets, put chips on “Pass Odds” or “Don’t Pass Odds” after the Point is set. They can be removed or re-added at any time before the round ends.

Place 6 and Place 8

Place 6 and Place 8 bets work like Pass Line bets. They have a very low house edge of 1.52% and pay 7:6 instead of even money. Unlike Pass Line wagers, they aren’t tied to the come-out roll or Point. Place chips on 6 or 8, and the bet is live. It’s also possible to place bets on 4, 5, 9, and 10, which win the same way but carry a higher house edge.

Field Bets

Field Bets in Craps is a one-roll wager that can be placed at any time during a round. It covers seven numbers: two, three, four, nine, ten, eleven, and twelve. If any of these are rolled, the bet wins. Most numbers pay even money, while the number two pays 2:1 and twelve pays 3:1. The house edge is 5.56%, making it less favorable than Pass Line or Place bets, but many players enjoy it for the excitement and variety it adds.

Craps Strategy Tips

  • Start with Pass Line or Don’t Pass bets: These wagers have the lowest house edge and are the foundation of Craps play.
  • Take Odds bets: After a Point is established, adding an Odds bet to your Pass Line or Don’t Pass wager pays at true odds, with no house edge.
  • Place 6 and Place 8 – two of the best bets: These bets offer better payouts and a lower house edge compared to placing other numbers.
  • Hitting prop bets are difficult: One-roll bets like Any Seven or the Hardways carry high house edges, making them risky long-term.
  • Manage bankroll carefully: Set a budget before playing and stick to it - Craps is fast-paced, and small bets can add up quickly.

The Worst Bets in Craps

  • Any Seven: Pays 4:1, but with a 16.67% house edge, it’s one of the riskiest bets on the table. The house edge is 16.67%.
  • Hard Way Bets (4, 6, 8, 10): Require doubles to win (ex., 2+2 for hard 4). House edge ranges from 9% to 11%. This has an average 5% house edge.
  • Any Craps (2, 3, 12): Pays 7:1 but carries an 11.11% house edge.
