Home underdogs are plentiful on the Week 1 NFL betting lines, with eight of them lined up for the weekend plus another potentially coming into play. So how have home underdogs fared on the opening week of the NFL campaign in recent seasons?

Last year there were just three home underdogs on the board for the first week of the season, with the Atlanta Falcons a 3-point home underdog against the New Orleans Saints, the Miami Dolphins a 3.5-point home underdog against the New England Patriots, and the Dallas Cowboys a 3-point home underdog against the San Francisco 49ers.

Of those three home underdogs two of them won outright, with Atlanta knocking off New Orleans 37-34 in overtime and Miami shocking New England 33-20. Dallas, meanwhile, didn't put up much of a fight against San Francisco, getting tagged with a 28-17 loss in their opener.

Back in 2013 there were five home underdogs in the first week of the NFL season, and they went 1-4 SU and 3-2 ATS in those games. The 2012 season saw opening-week home underdogs go 2-3 SU and 3-2 ATS, while in 2011 they were 3-2 both SU and ATS. Eight teams were home underdogs in Week 1 back in 2010; they went 5-3 both SU and ATS.

Overall, then, home underdogs are 13-13 SU and 16-10 ATS in Week 1 in the past five years. As well, last season underdogs overall went 11-5 against the spread in the opening week, as the home favorites managed to go 8-5 SU but just 4-9 ATS in 13 games in that situation.

For this week there are six home underdogs on the schedule for Sunday, with St. Louis +4.5 hosting Seattle, Chicago +7 hosting Green Bay, Washington +4 hosting Miami, Jacksonville +3 hosting Carolina, Buffalo +3 hosting Indianapolis, and Oakland +3.5 hosting Cincinnati. As well, Houston opened as a 2.5-point home favorite against Kansas City, but that line has shrunk to the pick'em over the course of the week and the Texans could end up as underdogs.

As well, the Atlanta Falcons are 3-point home underdogs against the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers are 3-point home underdogs against the Minnesota Vikings Monday.
