Voted on by 50 of the most-respected sports writers in the industry, there’s no greater honor for an NFL player than winning the AP NFL MVP award. Looking down the list, you’ll notice that the majority of past winners have been quarterbacks (Adrian Peterson is the only non-QB to win the award in the last 12 years). In 2018-19, that trend continued, as we witnessed the convergence of unparalleled athleticism with elite passing as Patrick Mahomes dominated the NFL and led the Chiefs to a 12-4 record. Mahomes enters this season as the favorite to repeat as NFL MVP at +550 NFL odds, but there are plenty of other legitimate contenders to consider. 2020 NFL MVP Favorites
Patrick Mahomes +550 NFL MVP Odds
Patrick Mahomes put up one of the best seasons by a quarterback in NFL history in 2018-19, and as a result, he sits atop the odds to win MVP again this year. The 23-year-old threw for 50 touchdowns and owned the highest QBR (82.0) in the league. If he comes close to those numbers again in 2019-20, we could see the first repeat MVP winner since Peyton Manning won in 2008 and 2009.
Andrew Luck led the Colts to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth despite starting the season 1-5. Once the quarterback and head coach Frank Reich got on the same page, there were fewer quarterbacks in the league that looked better than Luck down the stretch, as he set career-highs in completions, completion percentage and QBR. If Luck can stay healthy, he’s sure to have an MVP-calibre season.
Aaron Rodgers +1000 NFL MVP Odds
Already a two-time MVP, Aaron Rodgers is a guarantee to be among the top passers when healthy. This season, Rodgers will have a new offensively-minded head coach, Matt LaFleur, who has the potential to bring Rodgers back to MVP form.
2020 NFL MVP Contenders
Baker Mayfield +1100 NFL MVP Odds
Baker Mayfield represents a new era in Cleveland. The former No. 1 pick led the Browns to a seven-win season in his rookie year and has been described as a once-in-a-generation talent. He’ll also have the offensive weapons around him this year to reach his full potential.
It’ll be hard to find a player that’ll more motivated to dominate the NFL this season than Drew Brees. At age 40, Brees will be keen to take advantage of a highly-talented offensive roster and return the Saints to contention in 2019-20.
We know that Bill Belichick will give Brady a plethora of options to make the right play, every play. Combined with the potential for some big-play receivers to be on the other end of Brady’s passes, the three-time MVP will have a chance to add a fourth this season.
2020 NFL MVP Underdogs
Jared Goff will be playing with a chip on his shoulder after a disappointing performance in last year’s Super Bowl game. A healthy WR Cooper Kupp will also be available to compliment the always dangerous Brandin Cooks. And if Todd Gurley doesn’t return to form, the Rams will rely on Goff like never before this season.
Lamar Jackson +5500 NFL MVP Odds
The buzz around Ravens’ camp is that Lamar Jackson’s offseason training has resulted in a drastic improvement to his pass game. If he’s able to maintain a run game that produced nearly 700 yards on the ground and become a more consistent passer, Jackson may push himself into the NFL’s elite.
Foles is taking the reigns as an undisputed No. 1 QB for the first time in his career. If he can get the Jags back to the playoffs, he’ll garner MVP consideration come season’s end.
