BET ON THE NFL

Have you ever filled out a big NFL parlay and had all the picks right – except for the last one? If only you had made a teaser bet instead. NFL teasers are a special kind of parlay, where you get to move each individual line in your combo bet. You can tease your football picks by 6, 6.5 or 7 points, making it much easier for your entire bet to cash in. The payout will be lower than a standard NFL football parlay, since there’s less risk involved, but that trade-off can be well worth it in certain circumstances.

What Is an NFL Teaser Bet?

An NFL teaser bet is a series of connected bets that must all win for the bet to pay out (much like a parlay). But unlike parlays, you get the bonus of shifting the lines 6, 6.5 or 7 points in a direction that lowers risk. When your teaser includes a point spread, you can decrease the spread for the favorite or increase the spread for the underdog. When your teaser includes a total, you can increase the under or decrease the over. Like a parlay, winning the teaser bet is dependent on all of the wagers winning and despite the lower risk level, teasers still hold the promise of a big payday at the end if you win.

How big? At Bovada Sportsbook, you can put as many as 10 teams in your NFL teasers (unlike 12 for a standard parlay), and your payout depends on how many points you tease by:

6 points: 25/1
6.5 points:20/1
7 points:15/1

That’s a considerably smaller payout than the roughly 642/1 you’d get for a standard 10-team NFL parlay, but again, the NFL teaser bet is much more likely to cash in. Sharp gamblers will use teasers in the right situations to manage their risk and build their bankrolls. The trick is in finding those situations.

How Do NFL Teasers Work?

Since you’re teasing the football lines by a certain number of points, you can only have point spreads and totals in your NFL teasers – no moneylines, props or futures. Otherwise, these bets work much the same way as parlays: You can’t bet both sides of a line, and you can’t bet the same team more than once. If any line results in a push or "No Action", that line is taken out of your teaser; a 3-team teaser will reduce to two teams, while a 2-team teaser will be graded as "No Action" rather than reducing to a single straight bet the way parlays do.

As an example, let’s revisit this possible 2-team parlay from Super Bowl XXIV between the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos:
San Francisco –12
Over 48

If you were to tease those NFL lines by 6 points, you’d end up with the following combo:
San Francisco –6
Over 42

Conversely, let’s say you wanted to make the classic underdog-Under parlay instead:
Denver +12
Under 48

In this case, a 6-point teaser would give you these two lines:
Denver +18
Under 54

Either way, you can see how powerful these teasers can be. It would have been considerably easier for the Niners to beat the Broncos by at least 6 points instead or 12, or for the final combined score to go Under 54 instead of 48. But sometimes, 6, 6.5 or even 7 points just isn’t enough. For even more leverage, you can make a special kind of NFL teaser called a sweetheart teaser. Now you have the option of moving the lines by either 10 or 13 points – that’s a lot of points. Again, your payout will be lower the more points you tease, and with sweetheart teasers, you need to have at least three teams in your combo when you tease by 10 points, and at least four teams when you tease by 13. Also, any push in a sweetheart teaser is treated as a loss.

How to Bet NFL Teasers

When you’re betting NFL teasers at Bovada Sportsbook, simply choose the lines you want in your combo bet, then tap or click on “Teaser” from your Bet Slip and use the drop-down menu to select how many points you want to tease by. The software will do all the payout calculations for you right on your Bet Slip. You can edit your choices at any time before submitting your teaser bet.

From a value perspective, it mathematically makes the most sense to go after 8-team NFL teasers, which pay out at 14/1 when you tease by 6 points. And the best NFL lines to tease are those that will cross one of the “magic” numbers in football, three being the most important – since more NFL games are decided by three points (roughly one in six) than any other winning margin. Better still, try crossing both three and seven at the same time; for example, tease Miami +2 to Miami +8, or Seattle –7.5 to Seattle –1.5. This will help you get the most betting value from your football teasers at Bovada.
