The Big One is just around the corner. This Saturday (8:35 PM EDT, NBC) is the 34th running of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, featuring 11 of the world’s best thoroughbreds competing for a $6-million purse at the Del Mar racetrack in California. Online betting for this hotly-anticipated race should be off the charts. Here are the different Breeders’ Cup betting options you’ll have at your fingertips this weekend at Bovada Racebook.

Straight Wagers (Win/Place/Show)

These are the simplest and most common bets in horse racing. You can bet on any horse to finish first (win), top two (place) or top three (show). The win is naturally the most popular of the three straight bets. At press time, Gun Runner is the 9/5 Classic favorite at Bovada Racebook, with Arrogate close behind at 2/1; many people will be betting on these two horses to Win, Place, or Show.

Exotic Bets

This is where things get spicy. In thoroughbred racing, you can bet on more than one horse in the same race for bigger payouts. This can be done in multiple ways:

Exacta: Bet on which two horses will cross the finish line first and second, in that order.

Trifecta: Bet on which three horses will cross the finish line first, second and third – in the correct order.

Superfecta: Bet on which four horses will cross the finish line first, second, third and fourth in the correct order.

Quinella: Bet on which two horses will cross the finish line first and second, in any order.

Boxed wager: Bet on any number of horses to cross the line in any order. For example, a quinella is the same as a boxed exacta. You can also box a trifecta or a superfecta; the more horses you add to a boxed wager, the bigger your chances of winning, but your reward will be smaller in relative terms.

Coupled entry: Bet on two or more horses from the same owner or trainer, as a team. Bob Baffert has four horses in the Classic; if you bet on Arrogate to win as a coupled entry, you’ll also win if Mubtaahij, West Coast or Collected crosses the line first.

Futures: Before major races like the Classic, the first horse racing odds will be posted on the futures market, where you can pick which horse will win. The other betting options will be made available closer to race time; you can already find the full list of Breeders’ Cup Classic odds by opening the “Today’s Tracks” menu at Bovada Racebook and clicking on “Breeders Cup Saturday.” The Classic is Race #12.
